Boulder Beer Mile Race Report
Zeiger claims 2nd major title of the season
By Barry Siff
Jan. 5, 2008 -- With five-time world champion Simon Lessing, and 2008 Olympian Matt
Reed, in attendance (along with approximately 50 other spectators), 18
Boulder-based athletes (primarily triathletes) toed the line for the
final Boulder Beer Mile of 2008 on New Year’s Eve. Returning Men’s
Champion, Peter Valentyk (6:47 in July), was in attendance, but was
clearly under the weather. Joanna Zeiger, fresh off her stunning win
at the Ironman 70.3 World Championship, was back to defend her title as
well.
“Winning Clearwater was certainly the highlight of 2008 for me; but,
hey, going out with a win here would mean a lot,” said the 37 year-old
Dr. Zeiger (Ph.D. Genetic Epidemiology).
But, looming in the back of every competitor’s mind was 26-year-old
“massage therapist to the stars”, Josh Shadle. “Hands”, as some of his
clients call him, finished a close second to Valentyk in July, running
the laps faster than “V,” but losing time with every chug of a beer.
Word was circulating around Boulder that Shadle had been focusing much
of his training this fall to speedwork (i.e. trying to down his beers
in a much faster time).
